2 a Clàssica Xavi Tondo – Valls

We took the 6 hour drive out to Salou to our hotel, ready for the race the following morning in Valls near Barcelona. This was the penultimate Copa de Espana race, the 2nd Clàssica Xavi Tondo, a 170Km mountain race.

It was a long drive, and it was baking hot, but luckily we had the air conditioning in the car! after we arrived, we went for a team ride, including our manager Ivan David. We stopped off at a supermarket to get some soft drinks, and we took a break and discussed the race. We took the ride next to the sea, which was nice.

When I studied the course in detail, I became aware that the course was different to last year, with more climbs, so I was a bit annoyed about that. So two things for me to factor in… over 5 big climbs, and the temperature around 25 degrees. Bring it on.

So, come race day, I was feeling fresh, and the race rolled out from Valls, but the mountains were tough. I stayed with the peloton until the last climb. Prior to that I got dropped half way up the second to last climb, but I maintained my tempo, and I caught the peloton further up the climb, then I was dropped again with the constant accelerations, and I managed to catch the peloton once again near the top of the climb – then again I lost contact when further accelerations started.

I managed to catch them again on the long descent, but then we hit the final mountain, and that’s when the big attacks started, blowing the peloton apart into lots of small groups. I managed to join a decent sized group, then on the final descent I found myself ahead of the group with another rider, something which I didn’t intend to happen, I just looked back and there was a big gap. So me and another rider just worked together to the finish line, where I finished in 126th place out of 200 riders, 9.12 secs behind the winner. My team mates claimed some classification points, with Alvaro Vera finishing 70th at 4.21 secs, Rodrigo Alonso 79th at 5.27 secs, and Christian Gonzales 88th at 5.33 secs

I was happy with my performance in the mountains and how it panned out, it was a long though mountain race, but my legs felt good. It was a long 8 hour journey to when I arrived back in the apartment though, and I just had enough energy left for a bowl of oats before crashing into bed!
