LXXXIV Santikutz Klasika – Legazpi

Today’s race was the LXXXIV Santikutz Klasika (Clasica Santacruz) – a 141km race based in Legazpi in the Basque country, and featuring 7 mountains. It is the toughest Copa de Espana and a very special prestigious race that is steeped in history, originating from 1929.

The plan during the race was to work for my team mate Ignacio and take him to the front, in preparation for the climb, where he could attack. I totally buried myself and used 100% effort getting to the front and holding position, so by the time we hit the climb, I let Ignacio go and tried to hold on to the peloton, but my legs needed to recover. Once over the top of the climb, I managed to catch the peloton on the descent, but after further brutal climbs, the peloton was scattered and totally blown apart. It was a brutal race, with a large amount of riders losing contact, and in the end, from my team only Cristian González and Rodrigo Alonso made the finish.

Next week we head to the penultimate Copa de Espana race, the Xavi Tondo Memorial.
