XC Loinatz Proba – Beasain

Yesterday morning we took the long drive up to the Basque country for today’s race, the LXXXIX Loinatz Proba in Beasain, the 3rd Memorial Ion Lazkano, a 160KM mountain race with three mountains passes. This is a very old race that originated in 1926, and has run every year except for two years in the 1930s.

The plan was to support my team-mate Slahde, but after 20km I was caught up in a crash. I picked myself up, with no damage done, but the peloton was going at full gas, so it took a while to get back on, and then it was not possible to move back up to the front, as the pace was fast, and the peloton was strung out in single file. It was quite a while before the peloton eased up and I could move up again.

I spent some more time up near the front assisting my team-mate ready for the climb, but around 5km before the mountain I had a puncture. The team car changed my wheel and I draughted the team cars to get back on the peloton, but it was just before the climb when I finally caught the peloton, so I was at the back already when we hit the climb, and the pace up the climb was intense, and I lost contact at around 120km, along with a groupetto.

Only Slahde from my team scored a top 50 result, finishing in 33rd position. Out of a field of 200 riders, only 65 riders finished the race, which gives you an indication of how brutal it was, and how tough the mountain passes were.

Time to recuperate after a very long drive back to Madrid, and now I’m looking forward to 3 races next week, including the Vuelta a Sevilla.

Bring it on!
