XII Vuelta a Sevilla – 2017

This week was a long weekend’s racing with a lot of travelling. First, on Friday we took the long journey down to Seville for the XII Vuelta a Sevilla two day stage race, which took place on Saturday 22nd & Sunday 23rd July…

Stage 1 (Saturday) – XV Clásica Santa Ana:

Today I stayed with the peloton over the main climb, but as the peloton stretched out on a fast descent, a rider up ahead caused a gap, which caused a split and created a grupetto. We attempted to bridge back to the peloton, but due to the main breakaway and constant attacks up front, and the resulting high speed of the peloton, we were unable to make contact again. I crossed the line in the large grupetto, in 105th place, 7.36 behind the winner.

My team mate Adrian Garcia finished in the bunch sprint in 51st place, with Ignacio finishing in 57th place, Alonso in 62nd, and Alvaro in 67th, all at 13 seconds.

Stage 2 (Sunday) – XVIII Velá de Triana:

Today was a tougher stage with higher climbs, and I was feeling stronger than yesterday, but on the first climb I had a puncture. My team car assisted and changed the wheel, and I set off to catch the peloton, but the rim on the spare wheel was too, wide and was rubbing on my brakes, so I had to stop again and readjust the brake caliper.

By the time I got going again, I had lost a lot of time, so I draughted the team cars and attempted to make my way back to the peleton. The terrain was lumpy, and although I saw the peloton up ahead, and I managed to get within around probably 20 seconds, someone attacked off the front and the peloton started going at full gas, so I couldn’t make it back on, and I ended up in the grupetto at the back of the race.

It was disappointing because I felt good today, and I was unlucky with the wheel change. I have a very long journey back to Madrid now, and I need to eat and get a good night’s sleep, as tomorrow I will be travelling again, this time from Madrid to Alicante, for the race on Tuesday. Let’s do it!
